“Jojo Rabbit” (2019) is Taika Waititi’s daring satirical comedy-drama set during the final days of Nazi Germany, following a lonely German boy named Jojo (Roman Griffin Davis) whose world view is turned upside down when he discovers his mother (Scarlett Johansson) is hiding a Jewish girl (Thomasin McKenzie) in their attic. Cinematographer Mihai Mălaimare Jr. uses a vibrant color palette that gradually darkens as reality intrudes on Jojo’s worldview. Waititi’s film follows in the tradition of Charlie Chaplin’s “The Great Dictator” and Ernst Lubitsch’s “To Be or Not to Be,” using satire as a weapon against totalitarianism while delivering a poignant message about love and humanity in the face of hatred.
